WORCESTER, Mass – Colby Women's Crew, ranked 14th nationally in Division III women's rowing, placed all three crews in the Petite Finals at the New England Rowing Championships on Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester, MA on Saturday.
Rowing in some of the calmest conditions Lake Quinsigamond has seen in recent memory for championship racing, the Mules' First Varsity Eight of Coxswain Lillie Kontor, Stroke Cara Moynihan, 7 Katie McKinley, 6 Ellie Krossa, 5 Carlin Schildge, 4 Alessandra Grossman, 3 Marta Torelli, 2 Helen Watson, and Bow Lilly Watson placed third in their morning heat with a time of 6:53.947. The heat was won by 4th ranked Wellesley, while 5th ranked Wesleyan finished second in 6:50.402. Colby's third place, ahead of Mt. Holyoke, Simmons, and Amherst, was enough to advance to the afternoon Petite Final (Places 7-12).
The Mules Varsity Eight finished third in the Petite Final to place 9th overall with a time of 7:14.577, just 0.345 seconds behind 2nd place Coast Guard, and behind Petite Final winner, 12th ranked Tufts, who crossed the line with a time of 7:12.507. The Mules finished ahead of the University of Vermont, Trinity, and Mt. Holyoke in their final.
In Second Varsity Eight racing, the crew of Coxswain Ellie Parker, Stroke Stewart Egan, 7 Eliza Mushinski, 6 Rosie Kilcoyne, 5 Alyssa Kent, 4 Alison Obstler, 3 Katie Squires, 2 Kate Burke, and Bow Itsy Seeman placed third in their morning heat with a time of 7:06.692, behind heat winner Tufts (6:54.584), second place Williams (6:57.569), and ahead of Vermont and Mt. Holyoke, to advance to the afternoon Petite Final.
In the Petite Final, the Mules Second Varsity Eight finished second behind Smith in a very close race to place 8th overall. Smith won the Petite Final with a time of 7:22.879, while the Mules crossed the line close behind in 7:24.954, beating Coast Guard, Amherst, University of Vermont, and Trinity in their final.
In Third Varsity Eight racing, the crew of Coxswain Riley Karp, Stroke Charlotte Jones, 7 Annabel McLaughlin, 6 Lucia Middleton, 5 Sloane Hauck, 4 Helen Carroll, 3 Caitie O'Sullivan, 2 Abby Conway, and Bow Jodie Cen placed 9th in the morning time trial with a time of 6:00.101 over the 1650-meter course to qualify for the afternoon Petite Final (places 7-10).
In the Petite Final, the Mules Third Varsity Eight finished second with a time of 7:51.368 behind Wesleyan who crossed the line in 7:41.815, and ahead of Trinity and Amherst to place 8th overall.
The Mules will race again on Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester, MA next Sunday, May 12th, at the National Invitational Rowing Championships. This race also serves as the NESCAC Championship.
