Colby softball nearly takes opener in setbacks to Bantams

HARTFORD, Conn. -- Julia Saul doubled in each game and drove in four runs on the day for the Colby College softball team in 4-3 and 12-5 setbacks to Trinity College in NESCAC East play Saturday.

The Mules play two games at University of Southern Maine at noon Sunday.
 
Game 1 highlights
* Saul (pictured) pitched a complete game in the opener, allowing three earned runs while striking out three and walking none.
 
* Saul also helped Colby get back in the game with a bases clearing double in the top of the sixth inning. Her hit brought in Vanessa Warshaw, Kathleen Mason, and Holly Lallis. Saul also had a walk.
 
* Paige Hartnett had two hits to lead the Mules (2-22 overall, 0-9 NESCAC East). Hailey Rohall, Carly Swartz, and Warshaw added hits. Wiley Holton walked two times, while Mason scored and walked.
 
* Erica Merullo had three hits, two RBI, and two stolen bases for Trinity (17-11, 6-3 NESCAC East).
 
Game 2 highlights
* Rohall kept up her hot hitting with three in the nightcap for Colby. Saul added two hits, scored, and drove in a run.
 
* Hartnett and Holton both had one hit, one run, and an RBI. Ella Hommeyer had a hit and scored a run. Lallis and Mason also had hits, while Lolo Niemiec scored one run.
 
* The Mules had a lead of 3-2 and the game was tied 5-5 after four innings.
 
* Cassidy Schiff had three hits and three runs for the Bantams.
