STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, Colo. -- Colby College's Zane Fields opened the NCAA Division I Skiing Championships by placing 14th in the men's 10-kilometer classical race on Thursday at Howelsen Hill.
Fields, in a field of 40 skiers, had a time of 28 minutes, 59.8 seconds to earn 17 points.
"It was actually a good day for him and his best classical NCAA result. Whenever you race at altitude, it’s tough to know how your body will respond," Colby head coach Tracey Cote said. "He skied a very solid and consistent race and that should be a really good sign for Saturday’s freestyle race, which is his strength."
Fields, who won six Eastern Intercollegiate Ski Association races, will get a day off on Friday before competing in the 20K freestyle mass start Saturday at 11 a.m. (EST). Fields had his best finish in NCAA competition last year in taking 13th place in the 20K mass start.
