Men's squash finishes fifth in the NESCAC after big win over Amherst

CLINTON, N.Y. -- The sixth-seeded Colby College men's squash team finished fifth in the NESCAC for the second straight year after a thrilling 5-4 win over fifth-seeded Amherst College on Sunday.

Amherst had taken a 5-4 win over the Mules earlier in the season. Colby also beat the Mammoths in last year's fifth-place match.
Benjamin Kwass, Chase Holding, and Jason Brodo all won 3-2 matches in dramatic ways for the Mules.
Kwass lost the first two sets at the second position, but stormed back for 13-11, 11-2, 11-7 wins in the final three sets to beat Robert Parker.
First-year Chase Holding (pictured) came up big in the tight sets to win at the sixth position. He won 14-12 in the opening set and then closed the match with a 13-11 victory in the fifth set.
The difference in Sunday's match to the regular season encounter was Brodo's win at the seventh position. Brodo had lost to Chris Zimmerman in the earlier match and trailed 2-0 in sets Sunday. However, Brodo battled back for 11-7, 11-5, and then an 18-16 win in the fifth set.
First-year Alex Kurtin had the easiest win for the Mules, taking an 11-7, 11-4, 11-7 victory at five. Matt Epstein had the other Colby win at the ninth position with a 3-1 victory.
Colby's win will help the 24th-ranked Mules in the national rankings. Amherst came into the weekend ranked 23rd.
