Waterville, Maine - The Colby College Men's Rugby club won a huge match against UMass Dartmouth 38-36 Saturday on Seaverns Field at Harold Alfond Stadium.
The Mules had major contributions from Ethan Beatty, Chase Goode, and Peter Hilton as well as a perfect (six of six on kicks) effort from Steven Ditzler. It was a characteristically frigid, snowy day on Mayflower Hill but the Mules displayed extreme mental fortitude in the face of a fierce and weathered UMass-Dartmouth team. While the Corsairs displayed consistent bouts of offensive ability, the Mules victory was bolstered by an extreme dedication to defensive play.
The numerous defensive contributors include players such as Mack Fisher, Demetrius Ramirez, JC Magnotto, and Ben Shapiro, the latter three all seniors on a determined Mule squad. Additionally, Sam Donahue performed with extreme grit as well. Able to stay consistent and precise with their game plan, the Mules went up 38-30 late in the game. The visiting UMass-Dartmouth club remained composed, scoring a try as time expired. At 38-36 Mules the UMass-Dartmouth tying kick attempt fell short in the face of the blistering Seaverns Field wind, leaving the Corsairs short and the Mules victorious.
Although the conditions tested the event crowd almost as much as the competitors, the cold venue was nonetheless a pearl to encounter. The win is a testament to the Mules' ability to execute under extreme conditions.
Colby moves on the national tournament in Sienna, NY this upcoming weekend. "On to Sienna," they cheered!
