Men's hockey settles for 3-3 tie, earns playoff spot

NEW LONDON, Conn. — The Colby College men’s hockey team had to settle for a 3-3 tie with Connecticut College, but the Mules did clinch a NESCAC playoff spot on Friday.

The Mules are 8-10-5 overall and 5-9-3 in the conference heading into Saturday’s 4 p.m. game at Tufts University in the regular season finale. Wesleyan could still tie the Mules with a victory Saturday and a Colby loss at Tufts. However, Colby has the head-to-head tie-breaker by going 1-0-1 against the Cardinals.
Colby had leads of 2-0 and 3-1 against the Camels (3-17-3, 0-14-3). Alex Walsh scored an unassisted power play goal at 7:46 of the third period to give the Mules a 3-1 margin.
The Camels, though, scored two goals in a span of 23 seconds to tie the game. Joe Birmingham scored at 14:05 and William White added his first goal of the season at 14:28.
The Mules took a 2-0 lead after two periods on goals by Michael Decker and Kevin Doherty. Decker got the first goal of the game at 10:09 from Nick O’Connor and Michael Rudolf. Doherty followed at 18:31 when he one-timed a shot as he was streaking in from the right side. Walsh and Rudolf had the assists.
The Camels set the tone for the third period, scoring just 1:09 into play. Joe Giordano scored easily in front off some passes near the crease.
Emerson Verrier stopped 24 shots for the Mules, while Tom Conlin made 27 saves for the Camels.
