MALDEN, Mass. -- The 12th-ranked Colby College men's hockey team took a 1-0 lead, but Tufts University scored the final three goals of the game in a 3-1 victory over the Mules on Saturday at Valley Forum.
Colby ends the first semester of play at 5-2-1 overall and is tied with Tufts at 4-1-1 in the NESCAC for second place behind new league leader Hamilton College.
Junior Brian Brown scored the game-winning goal during a five-on-three power play in the third period for the Jumbos (6-2-1 overall).
Tufts junior goalie Nik Nugnes made two saves on Colby breakaways in the third period. He finished with 29 saves.
Nugnes' first quality save came with 13:40 left in the first period when Colby's Devin Albert got the puck alone in front of the goal. He held it to wait for an opening, but Nugnes stood firm and made the save. Tufts' Anthony Farinacci hit the post with 8:15 remaining in the first and the game went to the first intermission scoreless.
After killing a Tufts power play early in the second period, Colby took a 1-0 lead less than a minute after the man-advantage expired. Albert put a perfect tape-to-tape pass from behind the net on the stick of Nick O'Connor (pictured) in front and he converted his fifth goal of the season at 6:09.
The Jumbos scored twice on power plays, as Colby spent 20 minutes in the box on seven infractions overall. The first for Tufts came when Tyler Scroggins slid a shot from the right point through traffic to tie it at 1-1 at 13:37 of the second.
Into the third period, Colby was whistled for a pair of penalties at 2:56 including a five-minute major. Tufts capitalized as Scroggins fed Brown in the left face-off circle and his blast put Tufts up 2-1 at 3:43 of the third. The Mules were able to kill the rest of the penalty.
After Brown hit the post nearly expanding Tufts' lead, Nugnes made his first breakaway save with 12:40 on the clock. After another five-minute major called on Colby, the Mules created another breakaway and this time Nugnes sprawled and made the save with his right pad.
The Jumbos received an insurance goal from Oliver Takacsi-Nagy with 1:42 remaining in regulation. Colby pulled Tucci with 1:15 left.
Tucci finished with 20 saves in the Colby net. Senior defenseman Geoff Sullivan blocked four shots, while O'Connor recorded 12 face-off wins and Rauseo finished with 11.
The Mules do not play again until Friday, Jan. 6, at Hamilton.
