Men's hockey slams Falcons, 8-3

WATERVILLE, Maine -- After giving up a goal just 50 seconds into the game, the 14th-ranked Colby College men's hockey team bounced back in a big way with an 8-3 non-conference victory over Fitchburg State University on Sunday at Alfond Rink.

The Mules improve to 8-5-4 overall, while the Falcons drop to 8-10-1.

Fitchburg State took advantage of a Colby turnover near center ice. Tyler Warila stole the puck, skated in, and found Nick DiNicola all alone. DiNicola waited for Colby goalie Andrew Tucci to go down and went around with a backhand.

The Falcons hurt their own cause by taking two straight penalties to give the Mules a five-on-three advantage. Colby, using good patience with the extra skaters, scored when Phil Klitirinos pushed a pass across the crease area to Jack Burton at the right post for the score.

The Mules took their first lead of the game on some solid defensive work from Nick O'Connor. He had good pressure from behind on a Fitchburg defender and was able to poke the puck away. The loose puck went directly to Scott Fenwick, who was all alone for the score.

The Falcons tied the game at 2-2 in the second period on a nice individual effort from Warila, who went coast-to-coast for a shot. Tucci made the save, but the puck went directly to Cameron Snyder. The first shot by Snyder was blocked by Geoff Sullivan, but he immediately knocked in the rebound.

Mario Benicky's hustle helped set up Colby's third goal from EJ Rauseo (pictured). Benicky won a puck on the left boards to Rauseo, who went behind the net and scored on a tough angled shot.

Colby went up 4-2 when Cam MacDonald picked up a loose puck in his own zone and skated down the right side on a two-on-one with Dan Dupont. MacDonald slid the puck across to Dupont for the one-timer with a defender on his back.

Griffin Fadden, playing in his fourth game of the season, caused the turnover that eventually led to his own goal. Fadden stood up a defenseman at the blue line and the loose puck went to Robert Cerepak, who skated in and had his shot saved. However, Fadden skated in behind and one-timed the rebound for a 5-2 margin after two periods.

The Mules needed just 27 seconds to go up 6-2 in the third period. Burton slid a pass to Kevin Doherty on the left side. Doherty quickly surveyed his options and slid a fine pass across the goal to Phil Klitirinos at the right post for the goal.

Colby scored its seventh goal on a delayed penalty call. Benicky got the puck to Dupont, who quickly pushed the puck across the ice to Thomas Stahlhuth for a one-timer near the right face-off dot at 1:18 of the third period.

Benicky closed out Colby's scoring at 10:25 thanks to Kevin Doherty's work on the boards and a nice pass from Rauseo. Doherty won the puck on the left boards from a Falcon defender to Rauseo, who found Benicky for a straight on blast.

Fitchburg State closed out the scoring with just 15 seconds to play. Corey Hayashi beat a defender and came in all alone on goalie Mack Burton for the score.

Tucci stopped 16 shots before Burton came in for the final 5:40 of the game. Charles Jakobsson made 24 saves and Kirby Saari stopped 15 shots for the Falcons.
