Men's hockey settles for 3-3 tie

GORHAM, Maine -- In a game with filled with clutch saves and back-and-forth play, the 14th-ranked Colby College men's hockey team settled for a 3-3 overtime tie with University of Southern Maine on Tuesday at the USM Ice Arena.

The Mules (6-4-3 overall) are now 1-1-3 in overtime games and have played two straight draws. Colby and Wesleyan University played a 4-4 game Saturday. The Mules will play at Middlebury College on Friday at 7 p.m.

After fighting back twice from deficits, Colby took its first lead of the game on a transition goal. Dan Dupont (pictured) stuffed home a rebound from in front after a JP Schuhlen shot with 7:53 left in regulation.

The Huskies (6-10-1) had the better of play for the opening 10 minutes of the third period. However, Colby goaltender Sean Lawrence came up with huge saves during that time. He made a point-blank glove save with 16:56 left in the third period.

Lawrence made another huge save when USM's Jordan Hall broke past a defender and was stuffed by the junior goalie in front with 4:33 to go.

Just 36 seconds after the save on Hall, the Huskies tied the game on a high shot by Alex Pantalone for the final score of the contest. USM had another chance when Johnny Kyte's blast went off the right post with 2:30 to play in the third.

Colby got off to a tough start, allowing a goal by Brett Norman just 16 seconds into the game. 

Devin Albert tied the game for the Mules when he scored with just one second left on the power play at the 15:20 mark of the first period. EJ Rauseo and Geoff Sullivan had assists. Rauseo's shot was saved and the puck went to Albert on the right side of the goal. 

The Huskies went ahead again in the second period on Norman's second goal of the game at 4:24. Norman also had an assist on the third score by the Huskies.

Colby battled hard to make it 2-2 with 12:56 remaining in the second period. The Mules were putting on major pressure on the power play and had two shots saved by goaltender Kyle Shapiro. The second rebound went to Jack Buarton and he scored on Colby's third try. Cam MacDonald and Geoff Sullivan had assists.

Lawrence finished with 28 saves and had a number of outstanding stops. Shapiro also was strong in net with 27 saves. 

Colby was 2-for-7 on the power play and held USM without a goal on four opportunities with the man advantage.
