Men's hockey 5-0 in conference home games after beating Trinity

WATERVILLE, Maine -- The Colby College men's hockey team moved to 5-0 in home conference games and goaltender Sean Lawrence had a big Alfond Rink debut with 39 saves in a 3-1 victory over Trinity College on Friday.

Colby improved to 6-4-1 overall and 5-3-1 in the NESCAC heading into Saturday's 3 p.m. home game with Wesleyan University. Trinity dropped to 8-4-1 and 4-3-0 in the league going into Saturday's 4 p.m. game at Bowdoin College. Wesleyan took a 5-3 win over Bowdoin on Friday.

Lawrence, a transfer from Quinnipiac University, was playing in his second game with the Mules and his first at Alfond Rink. He had 15 saves in the first period to help Colby take a 1-0 lead.

The Mules had one goal on the power play and two in shorthanded situations. Meanwhile, the Bantams scored their lone goal while down a man.

The Mules went up 1-0 at 10:42 of the opening period on Jack Burton's third of the season on the power play. Geoff Sullivan passed the puck to Devin Albert, who had his shot saved by goalie Alex Morin. However, the rebound went right to Burton on the right side of the goal.

Lawrence also helped out on Colby's second goal at 4:47 of the second period. Lawrence made a save with his stick and JP Schuhlen immediately passed the puck to Nick O'Connor (pictured). With defenders skating with him, O'Connor broke up the left side and went in on goal to beat Morin between the legs.

The Mules made it 3-0 on Kevin Doherty's shorthanded goal at 7:48 of the third period. Morin tried to clear the puck off the boards, but the puck went directly to Colby's EJ Rauseo. With two defenders coming toward him, Rauseo found Doherty all alone in front for the score.

The Bantams broke the shutout at 10:41 of the third period on Anthony Sabitsky's goal. The Mules were putting pressure on in the power play. However, a pass back to the point was poked away by Samuel Johnson to Sabitsky, who raced past the benches and ripped a shot for the goal.

Morin finished with 16 saves and eight stops in the second period.
