Men's hockey loses lead, falls in overtime to No. 7 Geneseo

WATERVILLE, Maine -- The Colby College men's hockey team came 25.2 seconds away from staying unbeaten, but seventh-ranked Geneseo tied the game at 3-3 and then won 4-3 in overtime to win the Bowdoin/Colby Face-Off Classic on Sunday at Alfond Rink.

Conlon Keenan scored his ninth goal of the season at 2:50 of the overtime period to give the Knights (6-1-1 overall) the victory and the tourney championship. Keenan got behind Colby's defense and took a pass from Andrew Romano right in front of Mule goalie Andrew Tucci. Keenan's first shot was saved, but he quickly gathered the rebound and banged in the winner.

Colby came back from a 2-0 deficit after one period to take a 3-2 lead on an unusual goal by Mario Benicky. With the draw just outside the Geneseo blue line, Colby center Colin Reilly won the face-off by pushing the puck forward. Benicky, knowing that Reilly was trying to push the draw forward, got a good jump and beat a Geneseo defender. With Knight goaltender Devin McDonald coming out hard, Benicky was able to flick the puck over McDonald for a 3-2 lead with 6:29 to play.

The Mules and the Knights each were called for penalties with 1:57 left in regulation. With the draw in Colby's zone, Geneseo pulled McDonald for the 5-on-4 advantage.

The Knights had good puck movement on the tying goal by Condon with 25.2 seconds to play. Stephen Collins had his 12th assist of the year and Romano his fifth on the play. Condon was up top on the 5-and-4 and ripped a shot for the score.

Condon gave Geneseo a 1-0 lead at 13:47 of the first period on a shot from very close to where his overtime blast came from later. Collins, who had an assist on the first goal, put the Knights up 2-0 off assists from Trevor Hills and Anthony Marra with 3:06 left in the first period.

Nick O'Connor scored his fourth of the year to start the Colby comeback at 7:27 of the second period. Cam MacDonald pushed a pass over to Jack Burton at the left point. Burton unloaded on a shot that O'Connor tipped in to make it 2-1.

After Geneseo took a penalty just 1:04 into the third period, Colby's Geoff Sullivan tied the game at 2-2 just 16 seconds later. Burton sent in Kienan Scott on the right side. Scott's shot rebounded directly to Sullivan for the goal.

The Mules had a 42-40 shot advantage in the game. McDonald had 39 saves, while Tucci stopped 36 shots for the Mules.
