Men's basketball falls to Ephs

WATERVILLE, Maine -- Williams College led by as much as 20 points early in the second half and then had to hold off a late Colby College rally in a 72-66 NESCAC men's basketball win Friday at Wadsworth Gymnasium.

The Ephs (12-3 overall, 1-2 NESCAC) led 45-25 before the Mules started chipping away at the lead. Colby cut the margin to 68-61 on a 3-point shot by Patrick Stewart with 4:16 left in the game. The Mules missed two 3-point shots over the next two minutes that could have cut the margin to four points.

Marcos Soto scored inside to push the Eph lead to 70-61 with 2:05 remaining. Mike Greenman added a pair of free throws to push the lead to 72-61 with just 32 seconds remaining. The Mules scored five points in the final 18 seconds to get the final margin to six points.

Stewart had a game-high 17 points and dished four assists for Colby (7-7, 0-3 NESCAC). Ethan Schlager (pictured) was 4-for-6 from long range on the way to 12 points and five assists, while Joe Connelly had seven points, five rebounds, and three assists.

Williams used a 42-21 advantage in bench points and had three reserves hit for double figures. Matthew Karpowicz made all seven of his field goals and hit both of his free throws for a team-high 16 points. Greenman added 13 points on 3-for-5 shooting from 3-point range and Soto had 11 points. 

With the score tied 13-13, Williams went on a 10-0 scoring run to take the lead for good. The Ephs shot 59.4 percent (19-for-32) from the field in the opening half in taking a 44-25 lead at intermission.
