Mammoths top Mules with two early goals

Waterville, Maine - The #17 ranked Colby College Field Hockey team dropped a hard fought game against Amherst College by a score of 2-0.

This season Colby has been able to celebrate a high point in program history by holding a National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) top-20 ranking for the first time since 2003.  Amherst had been kicking at teh heels of the Mules, sitting just outside the ranking for most of the year.  Despite being unranked, the Mammoths had close matches with #1 Middlebury College, #4 Bowdoin College, and #6 Tufts University losing to all three opponents by just one score. Amherst came to Mayflower Hill intent on breaking through, and the Mules were set on knocking them back.

Amherst hit for one goal in the first (Franny Daniels, unassisted) and one goal in the second (Beth Williamson from Laura Schwartzman), and 16 minutes into the contest the Mules found themselves down 2-0.  While the remaining 44 minutes were played without a score, the two teams battled back and forth for possession and constantly reversed field looking for space.  Amherst goal keeper Emilie Flamme ranks right behind Colby goal keeper Emily Buckman on the NESCAC leaderboard for saves and right in front of her in save percentage.  Flamme turned away all three Colby shots on goal this afternoon, with all three coming in the third quarter.  Buckman increased her season save total to 76 with seven more against the Mammoths.   The three shots on goal by Colby came from Georgia Cassidy, Myriam Skodock, and Mia Kaldenbaugh (photo inset).

An aggressive game turned even more aggressive late as four cards were awarded in the fourth quarter.  Colby was issued three of them.  The tenacious style of the Mules was met head on by an Amherst team that matched well, and neither was willing to back down.  We still have a few more matches before the NESCAC playoffs begin, but anyone who witnessed today's game is looking forward to seeing these two teams meet again.

Colby is back in action for a Monday night battle on the road at #4 Bowdoin.  Game time is slated for 6:00 PM.
