WATERVILLE, Maine -- Colby College senior running back Jake Schwern (Essex Falls, N.J.), who rushed for 226 yards in a win over rival Bates College, was named the New England Small College Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week on Sunday.
Schwern, in snow and wet conditions, rushed for 226 yards and had all three touchdowns in a 21-6 win against the Bobcats in Lewiston. He had scoring runs of 44, 1, and 1 yards. Schwern was a workhorse with 40 carries and an average rush of 5.7 yards.
With snow covering the field at the start of the game, the Mules threw the ball just 13 teams. The Bobcats concentrated on Colby's running game, but Schwern still managed to pile up the yardage. He had 235 of Colby's 306 total yards for 77 percent of the offense
Schwern is second in the NESCAC in rushing yards per game (102.7), first in total carries (182), and tied for fourth in touchdowns (6). Schwern has not lost a fumble this season.
Heading into this Saturday's 1 p.m. game at Tufts University, Schwern has 1,493 rushing yards, 414 receiving yards, and 14 total touchdowns in his career at Colby.
