First-years Wilson, Derwin win more races for alpine team

CARRABASSETT VALLEY, Maine -- Colby College first-years Matt Wilson and Colbey Derwin continued the alpine ski team's success by winning FIS races at Eastern Development Series races on Wednesday and Thursday at Sugarloaf.

Wilson (pictured left) had runs of 58.47 and 1:00.17 for a two-run total time of 1:58.64 in winning the giant slalom on Wednesday. He was one of four skiers under two minutes.
 
Meanwhile, Derwin (pictured right) held off teammate Maximillian Richard with times of 42.92 and 43.54 for a total time of 1:26.46 in winning a slalom race on Thursday. Matt Calarco finished in seventh place in 1:29.74.
 
Derwin took third place in the giant slalom in 1:59.55, Cam Price finished eighth in 2:00.57, and Calarco was 11th with a 2:01.03.
 
In racing at Sunday River, sophomore Sandy Schoepke continued her fine skiing by taking second in a slalom race Wednesday. She earned her first FIS win in a slalom race on Tuesday. Schoepke had runs of 36.88 and 40.15 for a two-run time of 1:17.03.
 
First-year Julia Chahine took fifth place for the Colby women in 1:17.75.
