2018 Spring Fitness Class Schedule 

Classes in the Yoga/Dance Room, 2nd floor of the Alfond Athletic Center. Bring a towel and a water bottle to class. Classes are free to all members of the Colby Community. All classes are one hour and are in the Yoga/Dance Room unless noted.

Mon., Thu., 6 p.m.                                   Power Yoga                                                               Instructor: Raya Kouletsis

Power Yoga offers yoga based on Core Power sequencing techniques for a flow of unifying breath to movement. Class pace will vary for beginners through advanced levels. Bringing a towel and water bottle is suggested.

Tue. ,12:00 p.m.                                      Hatha Yoga                                                               Instructor: Arleen King-Lovelace

Participants will work on yoga postures (asanas) as well as breathing techniques to improve strength, balance, and posture. Core strengthening and stretching are integral parts of yoga as are learning how to invigorate and how to relax. – This class is designed for those who have had at least some yoga experience and want to deepen their practice. Yoga is a lifelong learning practice that increases mental focus and physical flexibility.

Open to one and all regardless of yoga experience. The sequence and focus of the class will be tailored to the needs of the participants. Suitable for all bodies, couch potatoes, and varsity athletes alike, this class can help increase flexibility, improve breath body connection for stronger performance, and improved regulation of your body’s reactions to the physical and emotional stresses of the day.

Circuit Challenge workout, implementing weights and cardio in a great one-hour workout.

PiYo LIVE combines the muscle-sculpting, core-firming benefits of Pilates with the strength and flexibility advantages of yoga. We crank up the speed to deliver a true fat-burning, low impact workout that leaves your body looking long, lean and incredibly defined.  The perfect class for those who love the sweat and burn of circuit training, but know they need the flexibility and mobility of yoga.

Wed. 5:30 p.m.                                       Ashtanga Yoga *                                                         Instructor: Thomas Klepach

* This class is held at the Dunn Dance Studio in Runnals. Ashtanga yoga is a system of yoga transmitted to the modern world by Sri K. Pattabhi Jois (1915-2009) based on the ancient Radiant Yoga Sūtras of Patañjali. This vigorous method of yoga involves synchronizing the breath with a progressive series of postures. The result is improved circulation, a light and strong body, and a calm mind. Once this sequence is internalized, this yoga form is particularly amenable to the adoption of self practice. Dr. Klepach studied Ashtanga while living in New Zealand, and teaches Human Anatomy and Physiology among other subjects in the Colby Biology Department.

Participants will work hard with instructor Christine Bishop in the lone Zumba class of the week.

Vinyasa Flow class: Move with precision, focus, and joy in this alignment-based class that will build strength, balance, and flexibility. Focus on linking the breath to the movement for a moving meditation that will invigorate and release tension. All levels are welcome!

Fri, 6 p.m.                                             Tabata                                                                        Instructor: Robin Harrington

Tabata training is a very intense form of Interval Training. Created by Izumi Tabata, the Tabata Protocol is simply the best supra-aerobic cardio workout every discovered. A popular regimen based on a 1996 study uses 20 seconds of ultra-intense exercise followed by 10 seconds of rest, repeated continuously for 4 minutes (8 cycles). A session consists of a warm up period of exercise, followed by six to 10 repetitions of high intensity exercise, separated by medium intensity exercise, and ending with a period of cool down exercise.
